Master's Programme in European and Nordic Studies
“Are you interested in developing your expertise in EU and European issues? Do you want to understand Europe from a Nordic perspective?”
European and Nordic studies (ENS) is an interdisciplinary master’s programme that takes you on a deep dive into current European and Nordic politics, societies and cultures. It is intended for students who want to explore European issues and phenomena from various angles and understand the roots of current developments.
Finland and Helsinki are particularly fascinating places to study Europe. Recent developments have changed the geopolitical and security landscape and Northern Europe’s position in it. Wider global trends, such as the challenges posed by societal and political inequalities and climate change mitigation, shape politics and societies across Europe.
You will be able to follow these developments from the first row. Perhaps due to the complex and unique geopolitical location of Finland, our teaching and research have typically looked at Europe as a complex and constantly evolving construction.
Another typical feature of our European and Nordic studies research is sensitivity to the regional differences and diversity in Europe. The programme not only looks at powerholders and centres of Europe, but also asks what Europe is from the point of view of margins.
The programme draws primarily from EU studies, Nordic Studies, political science, history, and area and cultural studies. However, ENS also includes optional courses in several other disciplines: communication studies, philosophy, law and sociology. The programme gives you much flexibility in designing your studies and developing your own area of specialization.
The programme has two study tracks. Depending on your choice of track, you will graduate with either a Master of Arts or a Master of Social Science degree.
The programme trains you to become a critical and independent thinker who has the necessary skills and knowledge to analyse and engage with current European and Nordic issues.
This programme is right for you if you:
- appreciate a possibility to develop your own specialization
- want to learn to look at Europe (and EU) from various angles
- are interested in regional approaches, and especially Nordic societies and cultures
