Master's Programme in Russian, Eurasian and Eastern European studies

Are you interested in learning about Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe and advancing beyond stereotypes and cliches? Do you want to explore how societal, political, cultural, security, and environmental changes impact the region as a whole, and its individual countries?  The Master’s Programme in Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies (MAREEES) will equip you with in-depth knowledge of the historical trajectories of the countries in directly related to ongoing research projects at the Aleksanteri Institute, meaning you will obtain the most up-to-date knowledge.

The interdisciplinary approach of MAREEES to phenomenon-based learning in this area will develop your problem-solving and teamwork capabilities, understanding and interpretation of complex area-specific questions, and their global inter-relatedness. These skills will prepare you for diverse professional environments. Potential post-graduation pathways include a career in governmental or non-governmental organizations, within education, the media, or the business world. The programme can also prepare students for a future career in research or for application to doctoralprogrammes.

Your studies will be coordinated by the Aleksanteri Institute, the largest and best-known research institute for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies in Europe. Core courses are conducted within the Aleksanteri Institute, while also providing you with access to other courses at the University of Helsinki. During your studies, you will develop knowledge on how environmental challenges, migration flows, legal cultures, military conflicts, major security issues, identity and nationalism, political conflicts, the rule of law situation, and social tensions affect the region of Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. The courses offered will put Russia’s war against Ukraine in historical and political context, providing means to understand the impact of this war for world politics. The MAREprogramme, focusing on a thematic approach, places these and many other phenomena into a global context, enabling you to identify their importance to this area and the world.
