Biomedicine (BIOMED), Master of Science
Study objectives
The Master´s Degree Programme in Biomedicine is a unique combination of science education and medical competence offered by the UEF School of Medicine. The education provides a firm foundation and students learn not only about the current developments but also are made aware of future challenges facing molecular biomedicine, especially genome-based diagnostics and personalized treatments.
The thesis-based graduate program is a research-intensive, designed to prepare students for employment e.g. in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and gives a solid foundation for further postgraduate studies. Studies focus on Molecular Medicine and there is a good balance between the theoretical studies, and practical courses and practical training.
Biomedicine MSc graduates
- possess a firm knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of human disease (strong backround in molecular medicine)
- understand the molecular processes behind the pathological changes in human tissues and whole body (knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology)
- are capable of interpreting and making computer-assisted analyses of biomedical information (bioinformatics skills)
- are networked to the biomedical community
- are capable of scientific reporting to both the research community and the general public
Study contents
The master level studies focus on Molecular Medicine, i.e. on the principles of disease development and diagnostics at the molecular and cellular level. The teaching is given at an advanced level by research professors from Institute of Biomedicine, A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, and School of Pharmacy. The M.Sc. research project and thesis is done under the supervision of reserch group leaders. It is also possible to do the research project in bio-pharma companies.
