Study objectives

Master’s Degree Programme in Digital Health and Life Sciences offers extensive training in modern biosciences and/or digital health engineering.

The programme offers four tracks: Health Technology (M.Sc), Medical Analytics and Health Internet-of-Things (M.Sc (Tech)), Bioinformatics (M.Sc), and Molecular Systems Biology (M.Sc). Please see the description and application details of the Medical Analytics and IoT track at the Studyinfo.

The students graduating from this cross-disciplinary programme will have acquired scientific and analytical skills, expertise in present theories and up-to-date technologies as well as practical skills including teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal skills in an international environment. The acquired methodological skills and advanced knowledge allow the students to continue their career paths in academia or industry.

The Health Technology track offers you specific skills to implement health technology solutions and understand ICT assisted healthcare processes. 

In the Bioinformatics track you will learn both biological and information technological aspects of bioinformatics. You will also obtain an ability to handle masses of data through programming and to analyse biological data with statistical methods.

In the Molecular Systems Biology track you will get expertise in current theories in systems biology and will master state-of-the-art technologies in modern biosciences, including transcriptomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

Study contents

The programme offers four tracks with a specific focus on Digital Health and Life Sciences. The Master of Science (M.Sc) degree can be completed in three tracks: Health Technology, Bioinformatics, and Molecular Systems Biology.

The goal of the Health Technology major is an interdisciplinary collaboration between information technology and health sciences. The major consists of studies from the fields of software engineering, information systems, and nursing science providing an excellent stepping stone for students to plan, develop, and implement health technology solutions and products for clinical practice and personalized health care. Adapting theoretical knowledge to implement and tune a working solution to a real-life interdisciplinary challenge in an international setting is also an essential part of your studies in this track. 
The applicants if this track also have the possibility to apply for a double degree option called the Digital Health and Life Sciences Programme (Health Technology major), where the first autumn semester degree studies are completed at the Fudan University, Shanghai, China. The programme takes two years to complete (120 ECTS) and it leads to following degrees: Master of Science from the University of Turku, and Master’s Degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Fudan University. 

As a major subject, Bioinformatics focuses on the analysis of diverse kinds of biomedical data, such as DNA sequences and protein structures. You will obtain theoretical knowledge of algorithms used in bioinformatics as well as practical skills to apply them. Such expertise is needed, for example, in the growing industry of personalized medicine that requires professionals for developing analysis methods and for performing analyses of human genome sequences and their variations. You will participate in research projects during your studies and get experience in working in a multidisciplinary team of experts.

Molecular Systems Biology offers extensive training in modern molecular biology and specialized education focused on systems biology. In Molecular Systems Biology track you will get a solid understanding of the theories and concepts behind state-of-the-art technologies used in systems biology research in a variety of molecular bioscience disciplines. Hands-on training provided in practical courses and research projects allows you to develop methodological proficiency in current systems biology techniques. The track provides strong expertise in modern bioscience research.
